Recently, after sending an email, I began to worry that I may have unintentionally caused concern. So, I would like to share my thoughts and hopes on this topic.
The reason I talk about complications following gynecological treatments is not to say, “Complications are common.” Rather, my goal is to give hope to those suffering from these complications, to let them know that there may be treatment options available to them.
In reality, there have been numerous cases where patients suffering from complications after gynecological treatments were told, “You’ll need a lifelong nephrostomy,” “Your only option is kidney removal,” or “There’s no treatment available.” I have, on several occasions, been stunned by what patients have shared. Some have even had their kidneys removed without knowing other treatment options existed. Hearing such stories is truly heartbreaking.
Of course, not every case can be treated with new options, but in many situations, there are alternatives available. That’s why I want to provide information on possible treatments and help patients feel that “another choice may exist for me.”
Many patients who come to our clinic are referred from other medical facilities, or they come on their own after researching their symptoms. I value each individual’s story and take each case very seriously. As a urologist, my wish is to offer some measure of comfort and hope to as many people as possible.
With the hope of expanding access to appropriate treatments for more individuals, I will continue sharing this information moving forward.
